There has been considerable debate as to how much use was made of studio overdubs. In his autobiography Kiss and Make-Up, Simmons stated that very little corrective work was done in the studio and that most of the studio time was devoted strictly to mixing down the multi-track recordings. In fact, all of the blood and fire of Alive came from songs on the bands first three albums, KISS , Hotter Than Hell and Dressed to Kill. But when listened to out of the context of the three-dimensional live KISS experience, those albums failed to capture the larger-than-life spirit the band conveyed in concert. Former drummer Peter Criss said the only live performance on the album was his drumming, and producer Eddie Kramer said he overdubbed certain parts to correct the bands mistakes, including a bass line in Cmon and Love Me. Alive was the album that catapulted Kiss from cult attraction to mega-superstars. It was their first Top Ten album, remaining on the charts for 110 weeks. Culled from shows in Detroit, New Jersey, Iowa, and Cleveland on the Dressed to Kill tour, the record features producer Eddie Kramer doing a masterful job of capturing the band's live performance on record. Although there's been some speculation of extensive overdubbing to correct mistakes, Alive remains Kiss' greatest album ever. An essential addition to any rock collection.
